Lombok, Great View and Great Memory

Have you ever heard about Lombok? Well, if you have already been there, then I’ll just try to remind you about how beautiful it is. And if you are still wondering what is Lombok, I’ll share my experience with you.

Lombok is an island of West Nusa Tenggara, one of the provinces in Indonesia. It’s located just east of Bali. There are two alternatives for you to go to Lombok. The First alternative: you can go by air plane. Lombok’s airport is Mataram’s Selaparang Airport, which occasionally also shows up in flight schedules as “Ampenan”. I think Selaparang is quite small as an International airport, and the flights are still limited from Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore only. But, I have a good news, now the government is building the new airport – a bigger airport. The other alternative is you can get there by boat from Padang Bai, Bali. It’s up to you, which alternative you want to choose.

Actually, West Nusa Tenggara has three islands; they are Lombok, Sumbawa, and Bima. But, Lombok is more familiar than the other islands, maybe because it is in Lombok where the province capital city is located. In Lombok you’ll never find traffic jam, because there are still a few vehicles in this city. And I suggest you to try “Cidomo”, a kind of traditional transportation. In Bahasa Indonesia, it’s stands for Cikar or cart, Dokar or house-drawn buggy, and Mobil because it uses car tires.

Lombok has many potential places for tourism. From ocean to mountain peaks, you can find it here. You can do snorkeling, scuba diving, or just swimming in the sea. If you like mountain adventures like hiking, rock climbing, or if you just want to feel the mountain fresh air, you must go to Mount Rinjani.

The most popular spot for tourism is Gili Trawangan. It’s a small island not so far from Lombok island. You can reach it by boat for about half hour. In Gili Trawangan you can do snorkeling, scuba diving, trying glass bottom boat, sunbathing, swimming in the sea, or just getting around the island using bicycle or Cidomo. Don’t worry about the equipment, because there are a lot of snorkeling and scuba diving equipment rental places. You will also be trained by professional trainer first before you dive in the sea. It’s all just for your own safety.

If you are too scared to dive, don’t worry about it. You can still enjoy the beauty of the coral reef by using the glass bottom boat. You just have to sit in the boat and watch the scenery from the glass that is placed in the bottom of the boat. If you are lucky, you can also see the big turtle swimming under your boat. Wow, it’s interesting, isn’t it?

Another interesting place you should visit is Senggigi Beach. It has beautiful view and landscape. The beach is clean and there is not much rubbish over there. You can also find the pearl fishery. It is spread out along the beach. If you feel so bored, you can go to the side street clubs or cafés. They provide many kinds of seafood and traditional dishes. You must try “Ayam Taliwang” and “Tumis Kangkung”, traditional dishes from Lombok. It’s very delicious and little spicy. Have you heard “Wild horse milk”? If you are curious about it, you can find it here. But the taste is very sour, I suggest you to blend it with honey to reduce the sourness. Lombok people believe that the milk will give you strength and good stamina.

If you have been to Kuta beach in Bali, then in Lombok you can also find the place with the same name. Kuta beach in Lombok, gives you another sensation. In this beach, the sand looks like pepper. It has coarse grain sands. But the view of this beach is very beautiful. It’s bordered with two hills with good grass at the top. I think it’s a suitable place for sunbathing.

At the top of Mount Rinjani there is a lake called Segara Anak. It contains a lot of sulfur, so maybe that’s why it is a bit smelly. You can also take a trip to Tiu Kelep waterfall. You can feel the freshness of pure water there. The local people believe that after you take bath at Tiu Kelep water fall, you will feel younger than you are.

Lomboknese are usually called Sasak people. They have some unique traditions, especially in the marriage ceremony and circumcision ceremony. Basically, they are Moslem, but got influence from Hindu culture. As Moslems, they normally pray five times a day, but in Lombok they only pray three times. That happened because their ancestors didn’t finish the lesson about Islam yet.

If you are interested in Lombok culture, then you should come to Sade Village. It’s one of the ancient villages in Lombok. You can find some traditional toys, accessories, clothes, and songket. Songket is one of  Lombok traditional clothes. It is made by hand. Usually the ladies do this job. Be careful if you want to buy songket. You should know the differences between hand made songket (original) and fabricated songket (imitation).

I think it’s not enough if you go to Lombok but doesn’t bring anything special from there. Lombok is very well known with its pearls. Pearls from Lombok has high quality and unique color. Usually pearls are planted in rings, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. For you ladies, don’t miss this chance to complete your jewelry collections. If you doubt whether the pearls are original or imitation, you can test them by burning them. If they melt down, then, it’s absolutely imitation, but if they don’t change, then you have the original one.

Well, that’s my story about Lombok. I hope all the information that I’ve shared can be useful for you. Lombok is the right place to release our stress and pressure. You’ll feel calm, quiet, and peaceful right there. Some tour guides say that you’ll find the sense of Bali in Lombok, but you won’t find the sense of Lombok in Bali. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s visit and enjoy Lombok by ourselves. Believe me, Lombok is a new paradise for people who want to take a break from their activities.

  1. Lombok is indeed a beautiful island, but unfortunately a lot of great tourist destinations in the island haven’t managed profesionally. They lack of proper supporting facilities

  2. Yes, I agree with you Indi. But, from the information that I’ve got, the local government has a program in tourism – it’s called Visit Lombok and Sumbawa 2012. So, now they have been preparing everything to welcome the event.

  3. assalamualaikum..

wah saya belum pernah ke lombok mas.. kayaknya suatu saat perlu deh.. paling mentoknya ke bali sih.. padahal lombok cuma timurnya dikit yaa

  4. iya disana emang Indah mas.. Tapi ga bersih😦
